Hughes Family Practice is a locally owned practice that has been operating in Hughes since the early 1970’s. The practice was started by Dr Jim McCauley, who retired in 2001, and handed over the reins to Dr Michelle Barrett. Dr Barrett welcomed Dr Patrick O’Callaghan as co principal in 2007 and they remain the principals to this day.
Whilst retaining the original building, the practice has undergone various extensive renovations through recent years. The practice offers an up to date suite of facilities that meet the demands of a modern practice and the General Practice Accreditation standards. The practice has always prided itself in being a true family practice and as such is proud to count many three generation families amongst our current patients.
For over 10 years the practice has been involved in the teaching and support of students and registrars in association with the ANU Medical School and other medical training institutions.
Currently, with nine GP’s and three registered nurses, the practice provides a wide range of services to patients of all ages. Our full range of services can be accessed here.
Whilst the practice is a private billing practice, we offer a flexible fee schedule and try to cater for all patients including bulk billing of children 5 years and under. Our GP’s cannot routinely take phone calls during consultations. A message can be left with staff and the GP may call back or arrange a staff member to book an appointment where appropriate. We don’t communicate via email.
Patients will be contacted where there is an abnormal test result or if your GP requests a follow up. Patients are also advised to call the Practice Nurse between 12.30pm and 1.00pm for information.
The practice is open 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and is covered outside these hours by Canberra Afterhours Locum Medical Service (CALMS). CALMS is owned and operated by Canberra GPs’ and offers an extensive medical deputising service.
